Madison

The Madison Historic Cemeteries are made up of four separate cemeteries that were added and combined over the years. Old Cemetery was the first and dates back to This is the final resting place of 2 Revolutionary Soldiers, a General, a US Senator and a Representative, and 147 marked and 51 unknown Confederate graves.

As is typical of cemeteries in the south you can see clearly the lines of segregation that separated the white and black burial areas. This persisted until well into the 20th century.





“Here are buried 51 unknown and one known Confederate soldier and one Negro hospital worker. These men died of wounds or disease in the Confederate hospitals located nearby.”
